Peach Harvest began July 7, 2010. PCP has 152 Peach Growers who are located in three distinct districts. These are Modesto, Fresno, and Yuba City. 50% of PCP’s peach crop comes from the Yuba City area, with Modesto following with 30%, and Madera coming in with 20%. Based upon the results of the first 3rd of the crop harvested and what many see left in the orchards, means the estimate for this crop is about 10% short of expectations. This estimation, combined with larger than normal FY2011 USDA cases contracted, plus the 2,000 acres (35,000 tons) pulled from production reflects a supply and carryover that is shy of industry demand.
Ø       In Modesto, extra early harvest is beginning to wind down and will be complete this week. Quality to date has been above average with good sizing and clean fruit. Organic Peach Harvest should commence at the end of next week.
Ø       The Fresno District has a lighter than average crop. There is still small fruit due to cool damp nights and Dr. Davis varieties will begin harvest next week.
Ø       In the Yuba City district all but 4 blocks of Extra Earlies have been picked. Earlies are coming on slowly and the cooler weather continues to slow the ripening process. Lows at night have been in the high 50’s and daytime highs have been in the low 90’s.
  • 70% of Peaches will be processed at PCP’s Lodi plant.
  • 30% will be processed at PCP’s Oroville for Fruit Cocktail and Fruit Bowls.
  • Harvest: Early July/August to Late August/September.

PCP has 31 Pear Growers in the Linden/River and Lake/Mendocino areas.

Ø       Harvest is peaking in the River District with growers rushing harvest as much as possible to stay ahead of dropping pressures, which are low due to cool weather. Earlier in the season, some growers thought they would meet their estimates but are coming up slightly short.
Ø       The Linden District is harvesting now and will get into full swing next week. The crop is lighter than normal with good fruit size.
Ø       Fruits continue to grow and fruit size looks good in the Mendocino District. Harvest will be late with growers now talking about August 15 as a start date. Weather conditions have been good for fruit growth. The Lake District fruit is small at this point. Growers are talking about waiting until August 20 to begin harvest in this district, to allow fruit to grow.
  • Harvest: Early July/August to Late August/September.
  • Processing is at PCP’s Oroville, CA. plant.

The Washington & Oregon Bartlett crop is 10 days behind normal harvest dates. Spring and early summer weather issues have reduced the crop from the pre season estimates. Current projections show the 2010 crop at 124,000 tons, compared to 134,500 tons in 2009, an 8% crop reduction.
Quality looks fair, with some fruit quality being affected by the freezing temperatures in late May. However, this will affect the fresh market more than the canning grade market.

Harvest: Early August to early September
Processing start: 3rd week in August

Organic harvest is now complete. In the South, we have one more field of pear shaped tomatoes to harvest. In the North, conventional tomatoes will finish their first full week of harvest! Currently tonnage is not up to estimate, however, fruit quality is good with soluble solids higher than normal for early season varieties. The early mid season varieties are not ripening as quickly as we would like to see. This is due to the unseasonably cooler weather. As with our other tree crops, the cool spring and early summer temperatures and even cooler nights have delayed harvest times 10 to 14 days. The state of California is behind in processing by approximately 1.7 million tons or 68,000 loads, therefore catching up to make budget packs seem unlikely at this time. Please stay close to your sales contact this summer to make sure your bookings are current and realistic, so that all legitimate needs can be considered.
  • Tomatoes will be processed at the PCP Woodland, CA Plant and Liberty Plant in Los Banos, CA.
  • Harvest: late July to early October.

SNOKIST GROWERS - 2010
   Northwest Sweet Cherries

The 2010 Northwest Cherry crop was affected the most of the Washington crops by the spring weather issues. Current reports have the crop at 40% below last year’s record harvest. This has created an extremely strong fresh market, which has pulled significant tonnage from processors in Washington & Oregon. With this, the 2010 Cherry supply will be very tight. Look for the Cherry market to firm quickly, as well as some possible inventory shortfalls before next season’s harvest. Pack should be completed for processors by the last week of July.

Harvest: Early July to late July
Processing start: Early July

   Apples

The 2010 Apple crop is estimated to be excellent. It was partially reduced by the spring weather problems, but still should be one of the larger Apple crops in Washington’s recent history. Part of the large crop is brought on by the influx of new acreage coming into bearing this year. The new bearing trend should continue over the next couple of years. The first official Apple crop estimate in Washington is released in mid August.
  • Harvest: Late August to late November
  • Processing start: Mid September
